Simple Seasonal Interiors- How to make that change from Winter - Spring.
I love changing the look of our home to compliment and reflect the seasons. It is almost like walking into a new home but without the expense of decorating. That's not to say that a good lick of paint or a change in wall colour or even using wallpaper can add to that enhanced effect. Yet, as I run my own business with a young family, I don't really have that time or to be honest the energy. So here's what I do.
Winter for me is the hibernating season, one where we spend most of our times indoors. I like to move the sofa and chairs a little closer to the wood burner, bringing in elements to reflect the shorter days and longer nights. This is where lighting can be key to creating an ambient atmosphere, lots of candles and tealight holders. A basket full of logs. Textiles such as woollen throws and blankets draped across chairs. Rugs on the floor, faux fur footstools for those cosy nights in front of the fire with a hot mug of cocoa! Cushions covers that are fluffy and soft to touch and plenty of them to dive in amongst. Woven baskets for storage as we tend to love reading and knitting, and as we are inside more, we seem to have more around us. Lidded baskets for the toys and puzzles.
Flowers tend to be sparse in their natural habitat at this time of year so I like to collect fallen twigs from cold afternoon walks or wisps of dried flower heads which remind of late autumn days. Glazed vases are wonderful, as the glaze offers a slight reflection of light back into the room which is needed on those grey dull days Our mantlepiece space fills up with candles, fairy lights strung across amongst sprigs of holly, and mistletoe. Everything is about nesting down and making our lounge a den in which we can laugh, play and feel loved and warm.As we begin to pull out of Winter, I confess to being ready to shake things up a bit and begin clearing, sorting, decluttering. More daylight and the promise of warmer days, makes me want to say goodbye to the Winter decor and hello to the change of a new season, Spring!
Now is the perfect time to take stock of your surroundings. What works in terms of furniture layout? As a family how do you function in this season? Is there a particular colour scheme that you love? Maybe a magazine article inspired you, or of course, Pinterest, which is perfect for moodboard creations. I'll let you know what the plans are for summer as we head towards those long light filled days and nights, spending more time outdoors.
